A Psychophysical Study of BRDF-Based Lighting
نویسنده
چکیده
Subjects were presented with three-dimensional objects rendered with BRDF-based lighting. The subjects were tested to see if (1) the object they were looking at affected their ability to evaluate an objects material and (2) if they were able to tell different materials apart based only on light reflectance. Results showed that even though most subjects felt like they were guessing, subjects were able to correctly evaluate the object’s material with about 70% accuracy. Readers should note that this study used a reasonably small sample size that was not very unique demographically.

Perceptually Motivated BRDF Comparison using Single Image
Surface reflectance of real-world materials is now widely represented by the bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) and also by spatially varying representations such as SVBRDF and the bidirectional texture function (BTF). The raw surface reflectance measurements are typically compressed or fitted by analytical models, that always introduce a certain loss of accuracy. For its ev...
متن کاملFast Arbitrary BRDF Shading for Low-Frequency Lighting Using Spherical Harmonics
Real-time shading using general (e.g., anisotropic) BRDFs has so far been limited to a few point or directional light sources. We extend such shading to smooth, area lighting using a low-order spherical harmonic basis for the lighting environment. We represent the 4D product function of BRDF times the cosine factor (dot product of the incident lighting and surface normal vectors) as a 2D table ...
متن کاملA Signal-Processing Framework for Reflection—Part 1: Reflection as Convolution
We present a signal-processing framework for analyzing the reflected light field from a homogeneous convex curved surface under distant illumination. This analysis is of theoretical interest in both graphics and vision and is also of practical importance in many computer graphics problems—for instance, in determining lighting distributions and bidirectional reflectance distribution functions (B...
متن کاملToward a Perceptually Based Metric for BRDF Modeling
Measured materials are used in computer graphics to enhance the realism of synthetic images. They are often approximated with analytical models to improve storage efficiency and allow for importance sampling. However, the error metrics used in the optimization procedure do not have a perceptual basis and the obtained results do not always correspond to the best visual match. In this paper we pr...
متن کاملUsing Near-Field Light Sources to Separate Illumination from BRDF
Simultaneous estimation of lighting and BRDF from multi-view images is an interesting problem in computer vision. It allows for exciting applications, such as flexible relighting in post-production, without recapturing the scene. Unfortunately, the estimation problem is made difficult because lighting and BRDF have closely entangled effects in the input images. This paper presents an algorithm ...
